For those of you that just haven't gotten enough of this sadistic little doll, you're in luck. Today Moviehole confirmed that not only is a sequel in the works for the franchise, but the studio is also planning a complete revamp as well. That's right, TWO new Child's Play movies.
Both projects were revealed at the Mad Monster Party in Charlotte, North Carolina, by Brad Dourif, the original voice of the Chucky himself (some of you may be more familiar with his works in the latter two Lord of the Rings films as Wormtongue).
The first film worth noting is the sequel. Dourif will again voice the title character in both projects, but in this installment, Charles Lee Ray (who, if you're familiar with the franchise, know is the man trapped in the doll's body), still trapped in Chucky's body, will team-up with his immediate family and help exact revenge on some past foes. Logically, it will be titled "Revenge of Chcuky".
The other project is the reboot of the franchise. Original creators Don Mancini and David Kirschner have been trying for a while now to get the film off the ground, so it's nice to see that they're finally getting their chance. And while the creators can be thanked for the great mix of horror and camp in the original series, they say that plans for the remake call for "a darker and scarier retelling of the original film, but one that will offer new twists and turns".
Personally, I'm all for more from this series. I've always thought they were fun films (well, other than the first time I saw "Child's Play 2". I'll never forget this moment - Andy and I were watching it, and I couldn't take it. It was too scary! I made us turn it off. I was about 6 years old and he was 4 or 5, yet he handled it better than I could. Bush league.). Other than that though, I've always enjoyed the films. They started to go a little overboard in the more recent installments with "Bride of Chucky" and "Seed of Chucky", but to be honest, they never really lost their tone. It was still the same brutal violence mixed with an almost child-like campiness. I'm not trying to pop those newest versions in nearly as often as the older films, but I'm still more okay with them than most.
I imagine that the sequel will kind of continue with the hilarity of the more recent sequels, while, obviously, the reboot will offer a fresh, darker take on the subject (though having a killer trapped inside of a doll's body and not adding an element of silliness doesn't seem right; those two aspects don't mesh up very well). But we'll see. I'll gladly check out both films when they release.
